I Am Back Out There

Sunday I went out to Santa Monica's 3rd Street Promenade for some people watching and some street photography. You probably already know that this is one of my favorite places to people watch, and it never disappoints. You would have thought it was the middle of July with the amount of people that was out there. But that is the beauty of Southern California. When the rest of the world is under snow, the sun is shinning bright and the temperature warm here. It is the one thing that makes it hard to leave.

I have been very guilty of going out to take photos and never take the camera out of the bag. Mostly because there are people every where and having to sit the bag down, take out the camera, close the bag and carry it on my shoulder or back; can be a bit cumbersome. I had been looking for a way to have all of the accessories I need without carrying the bag and have the camera in my hand, ready to catch the shot when it presents itself. Well I have found a way to make that happen.

Prior to going to Santa Monica, I stopped by Samy's camera on Fairfax in LA, and bought a photographer's vest by Domke along with a monopod by Manfrotto. I have a Manfrotto tripod but again carrying it around for street photography is a bit inconvenient. After purchasing these items I drove straight to Santa Monica took the items from the camera bag into the ample pockets of the vest, attached the camera to the monopod and headed out of the parking garage.

It was so freeing, nothing to carry besides the camera itself. I got quite a few shots, but it is often hard to do when the area is running over with people. I look forward to going out more and more with my new vest, with or without the monopod.
