Happy Birthday My Friend

It was three years ago when I found out that my friend Sandra was diagnosed with Cervical Cancer and she has been gone exactly 16 months now, and I really miss her. I woke up this morning, remembering that it was her birthday, and I reached for the phone to call her mother. When her mother answered the phone and realized that it was me, she said, Today is my baby's birthday." I told her that I know and that was the reason why I wanted to call this morning.

After hanging up with her I started to think about all of the crazy things that we have done together over the years. Even as far back as our freshman year in high school. Sandra was an only child, just like me, she was a daddy's girl, just like me, and she learned to drive at 14 just like me; but unlike me, Sandra would steal the family car to joy ride. Her father was a police officer and the precinct was in downtown Savannah, around the corner from our high school. There were times on our breaks from school, like during lunch when Sandra would go around the corner while her dad was at work with the car, and she would drive it away. One day when we were finished riding and had to go back to school, we were pulling up at the precinct where the car had been parked and her dad was standing right there waiting for her. As we all got out of the car, we said, " hi Mr. Malone", as we were walking in the other direction. He made all of us come back, and he scolded us, but Sandra didn't get into too much trouble. She was truly a daddy's girl.

You are truly missed my friend and I still keep you alive in my heart any and every way that I can. We will meet again one day, but until then HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
