African Americans have always believed in the power of prayer. We know that prayer is what has brought us this far, through slavery, through the civil rights movement, and through the many injustices that we still experience today. So the above picture is no surprise to me, but it would be a surprise to many, that is why you would not see the likes of it in mainstream media. We as African Americans have become ashamed to display our belief in a higher power, in my world, God. That is why we stand by and continue to allow our government to strip us of our faith. Divesting us of our roots, our faith and our dignity is what we have experienced from the moment we were taken from our native land. We are still experiencing a shadow of the same today. Since the time of our initial dispossession, many other factors have come into play for our people.
Since the cost of living is so stifling in this country, it now takes both parents to work outside of the home to make ends meet, that is if there is even two parents in the home; if not it is often that our kids suffer even more. There is no one at home to give our children, our legacy, the foundation of prayer and experience with them its beauty. I am speaking from experience because I was a single parent, my daughter was quite blessed to have two loving and very involved grandparents, which made a tremendous difference in her foundation, and today she is pursuing her degree in Journalism. I never had an ounce of trouble from my daughter, other than cleaning the room and getting that homework done on occasion, I was truly blessed because it was the hardest job I ever had to do. It wasn’t the finances that was the hardest it was finding the right balance of values, prayer, education, among other things a parent deems necessary, to pass along to that child. Therefore, many kids are getting most of these things from our schools, in which prayer is no longer an option.
It was not only prayer that got us through some of the hardest times of our existence, but also a strong sense of values; value of ourselves, value of money, and value of life. These were things that we at one time passed on from generation to generation. Reaching within ourselves, to our core value system, accompanied by prayers, is what at one time guided our paths, our decisions, our lives. We had a sense of who we were, where we had been, and where we were determined to go. We would reach down within, and then pray about it; this was our culture. Today most of our children do not have that core; it is not surprising that they have gone astray.
Now we are going to have a President that has and is displaying what our people have been missing. His example is one that African Americans, as all people, can look to and see, a man with many values that he openly displays without fear.
