Venice Beach
July 06, 2008
I have been in Los Angeles, California for almost 3 years and mostly all I have been doing is working and going home. Well I am really tired of that. I intended to really enjoy all of the things that this city has to offer, but “never got around to it”, as the old saying goes. Well I am starting to make it happen. I have often visited some of my favorite places like The Grove, on Fairfax and 3rd, Santa Monica, Venice Beach, and the Highland Center on Hollywood Blvd. Even though I still frequent these places I am finally starting to branch out even more, with camera in hand.
Going to Venice Beach on the weekend of July 4th was great, actually I went on Sunday, the 6th. It was a nice breeze from the water and lots of people, doing so many different things. On Venice Beach there are lots of street entertainment just like it is on Hollywood Blvd. in front of the Kodak Theatre, which is very much a tourist attraction. Venice Beach is also a place that attracts a great deal of tourist. This particular day there was a great deal of vendors selling anything from paintings to handmade soaps. This is in addition to the shops that are already established on the boardwalk. Quite a few palm readers and tarot card readers. This is a way many backpackers make money to continue their travels. There were also a number of photographers out there. One guy has lived in Venice Beach for over thirty years and had an array of pictures that documented the Venice Beach/Santa Monica area throughout that time. There were also a couple of professional photographers out there as well, which really surprised me because they are not able to sell their photos there for what they can through brokers and other sources. Yoshi Hashimoto, a professional photographer from Japan and has been in the states for about ten years. He said that he had been working as a professional photographer for over 25 years. He started in Japan doing commercial work for car manufacturers. I am learning that quite a few professional started this way. I didn’t recognize him when I saw him but I did recognize the name from seeing his work online. His work is really good and he also does most of his own printing as well as retouching in Photoshop and various other software programs. He was very nice and quite informative.
For lunch, Yunus and I ate at the Figtree Café on the boardwalk, and for dinner we ate at the Enterprise Fish Company. We later tried to find the canals of Venice, that is actually designed after the canals of Venice, Italy, but it was getting late and much cooler, and I would love to first see them in daylight. So we decided to go to the Fish Company and come back another day just to see the canals.
